ERIC SCHOLES

Eric Scholes, a highly accomplished freelance bass player based in the Auckland metropolitan region, is a prominent figure in the local music scene. His regular performances with prestigious ensembles such as The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, and NZ Barok attest to his musical prowess.

Eric’s journey in music includes obtaining a post-graduate degree in performance double bass at the renowned Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, under the mentorship of Ira Gold. His dedication to historical performance practices led him to explore viola da gamba and violone, studying with baroque cellist John Moran, and participating actively with the Baltimore Baroque Band.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Eric has enriched his musical expertise through participation in festival academies such as Akademie für Alte Musik Bruneck, the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer and Winter Institutes in Toronto, and the Amsterdam Early Music Summer School.

As a featured soloist with NZ Barok, Eric received acclaim for his performance of Dittersdorf’s concerto No. 2 in May 2019, showcasing his versatility and skill. In addition to his classical pursuits, Eric also engages his passion for music by playing electric bass in various bands.

Outside of the musical realm, Eric’s interests span activities such as spearfishing, camping, and tramping, reflecting a well-rounded and adventurous spirit. His diverse pursuits contribute to the vibrant cultural and artistic landscape of Auckland.
