NZ Barok | Winter Baroque Academy | 10th - 12th Ju NZ Barok | Winter Baroque Academy | 10th - 12th July 2026
Twenty-seven baroque musicians and eight tutors gathered at the University of Auckland School of Music this Matariki weekend for NZ Barok's Winter Baroque Academy — three days of lectures, demonstrations, and baroque chamber and orchestral playing. Performers on baroque violins, violas, cellos, double bass, harpsichord, recorder and violas da gamba brought to life works by Vivaldi, Corelli, Sammartini, Gabrieli, Bassano, Marcello, Caldara, Cazzati, Cima, Uccellini, Merula and Montalbano. The Academy's feature work, Vivaldi's La Folia, was performed by a baroque orchestra of 33 musicians.

Experience the enchantment of our Baby Baroque Fre Experience the enchantment of our Baby Baroque Free Kid's Concerts later this month - thoughtfully crafted to introduce the world of baroque music to young children aged 0 to 6 years. Immerse your little ones in the beauty of baroque music through a delightful and interactive journey with plenty of opportunities for audience participation. 
 
The concerts at Devonport Library on Saturday 18th July have sold out but good news - there are still tickets available for the two Friday 17th July performances (9:30am and 11:00am) at Somervell Church in Remuera.

University of Auckland

Designed for professional musicians, university students, and advanced secondary school players, the academy includes:
• Practical sessions on period instruments (or modern instruments with Baroque bows)
• Orchestral rehearsals and sectionals
• Lectures and demonstrations
• Informal concert performance

Instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, viola da gamba, recorder, and harpsichord.

The NZ Barok orchestra, together with soloists Greta Claringbould (soprano) and Blake Scanlen (baritone), generously donated their time and talents for this special fundraising event. The programme featured Corelli’s beloved Christmas Concerto, highlights from Handel’s Messiah, and exquisite Christmas music from Italy.
 
A heartfelt thank you to the orchestra, Greta and Blake, the NZ Barok Board for donating auction items, and everyone who attended and supported us. Your generosity helped make this a truly memorable evening.
